5G: Italtel in 3 Horizon 2020 projects. EU funding for 1.2 million euro

Italtel’s 5G in three research and development projects for the Horizon 2020 program. The telecommunications company announced today that it is part of the technological innovation initiatives in the European Union and has received a contribution of around 1,150 from Brussels. .000 euros.

The three projects in question are “MATILDA”, “5GCITY” and “5G ESSENCE”: “If we want to keep the promises of increasing the speed of data transmission and universal coverage of 5G, we need to develop a series of new important techniques and we are proud to have an important role, together with other companies, in these three Horizon 2020 projects “, stated Stefano Pileri, CEO of Italtel.

The projects will start in June 2017 and will last 30 months.

The involvement of Italtel in each of the initiatives will be based on the work already carried out in other European research projects, including “MCN”, “T-NOVA” and “SESAME”. Italtel will provide partners with its experience in Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Internet of Things (IoT), Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC), Virtualization and Cloud Computing.

Below is the scheme of the projects and the ways in which Italtel will participate in the Horizon 2020 program:

“5GCITY” (GA No. 761508) has the task of creating and distributing an open and multitenant platform, which extends the centralized cloud model to the edge of the network (Edge), with final demonstrators in the cities of Barcelona, ​​Bristol and Lucca;

“5G ESSENCE” (GA No. 761592) aims to provide a highly flexible and scalable platform capable of supporting new business models and new revenue lines by creating a neutral host market and reducing operating costs , thanks to a new approach for the ownership, deployment, operation and depreciation of the equipment;

“MATILDA” (Grant Agreement No. 761898) aims to implement a holistic 5G framework for the design, development and orchestration of 5G-ready applications and 5G network services using the principles of network slicing and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV).

For “5GCITY” the telecommunications company will play the key role of Innovation Manager, coordinating the Innovation Board and all innovation activities, including IPR management and standardization activities. Furthermore, Italtel will coordinate the requirements definition, use case, general architecture, regulatory aspects and business models of the project.

The global 5G solutions market, according to an Ericsson study, will reach an approximate value of 1,230 billion dollars in 2026, above all thanks to the growing applications in the energy sector (20%), manufacturing (19%), in the field of security (13%) and the media (10%), followed by transport (10%), the automotive sector (8%), financial services (6%). According to Ericsson, according to data from the latest Mobility Report, more than half a billion 5G subscriptions are expected and a coverage of 15% of the population by 2022.
